Cheap Holidays in Cancun

Cancun is a stunning large coastal city in Mexico`s eastern most state on the Yucatan peninsula. Cancun is located on the Yucatan channel which separates Mexico from the Caribbean islands and this, particularly Cuban, influence is evident in the local cuisine and culture. The area has plush vegetation and areas of white sandy beaches which are part of the reason so many international tourists flock to this area of Mexico every year. The climate is hot and tropical, but moderated by cooling sea breezes. Depending on the time of year, maximum temperatures range from 24C to 32C. If visiting during August and September one must be prepared from the tropical storm season, and in some years even the threat of hurricanes. Nevertheless, no matter what time of year you come to Cancun you will enjoy the idyllic surroundings, tropical climate and wealth of cultural, sporting and other activities you can take part in.

Aside from the fantastic climate, the area also has a wealth of historical sites which attract numerous tourists each year, the most important being that of the Mayan ruins. The Ruinas El Rey are old monuments and ruins of pre-Columbian Mayan shrines and buildings and are located near to Cancun. If wanting to see a more substantial site, El Meco can be found just outside the city on the road to Punta Sam. Chichen Itza is one of the most famous pre-civilisation sites in the world and this can be found a few hours drive away. Xcaret is also well worth a visit as it is an eco park containing old Mayan ruins, but also includes a host of endangered animals, exotic flowers and plants and information about the history of the area – a great day out for families.

The area is also rich in activities, especially water sports such as scuba diving because of the fantastic reefs and wealth of tropical fish. The nearby Cozumel is also a base for PADI diving certificates and lessons. There are also lots of water skiing, jet skiing and snorkeling opportunities and hiking and climbing in the inland regions. For the less active, there are great malls with designer labels at discounted prices, theme parks and environmental parks and zoos, some offering the chance to swim with dolphins.

The modern city of Cancun still is very proud of its heritage and Mexican culture whilst also providing many of the international facilities and restaurants that a globally renowned tourist resort needs to offer. Cancun first became a tourist destination in the 1960s as the Mexican government invested in the relatively unpopulated area. Nowadays 600,000 residents call Cancun their home and there is, on average, 3 million visitors to this area every year. Many of the visitors come from North America and Europe because of the increasingly cheaper and higher availability of flights to the region and the ability to find good package deals.

Due to the amount of tourists, there are about 150 hotels in Cancun with around 24,000 rooms and over 350 restaurants. The Hotel Zone of Cancun offers a wealth of different facilities, and hotels ranging from basic self-catering to luxurious all-inclusive resorts. Whichever kind you go to, you can be guarenteed fantastic access and transport to the main downtown and beach areas, large swimming pools and air conditioning facilities.
