Although cycling dates back centuries, specialist mountain bike production has moved forwards considerably over the past 35 years. Originally based on road bikes, the technology has changed enormously to cater for the rigours and strains of cycling on difficult off road conditions.

Off road riding is made much easier thanks to the innovations in the bikes design and build. This means you can take on harder trails, higher risk and a hell of a lot more fun.

Gears
With up to 27 gears available even the steepest of hills can be taken on.

Suspension
Your bike’s suspension lets you tackle those tricky obstacles with less effort and more control. Most mountain bikes have at least front suspension – great for uneven descents. Full suspension is the best option if you’re riding really rough terrain, but if all your cycling is smooth and leisurely you’ll find you just don’t need it.

Frames
Tough terrain, heavy use and front-and-rear suspension puts a lot of strain on your mountain bike’s frame. This is why super-strong materials and specialised shapes are de rigueur. But it’s no good having an indestructible frame if it’s too heavy to use; it needs to be light enough for you to be able to respond quickly to those last minute detours.

Brakes
Disc brakes are found on even budget mountain bikes these days. By moving the braking system to the middle of the wheel they are much easier to keep clean as do not come into contact with the ground which will often be wet and muddy.

Tyres
Chunky tyres with thick treads make mountain bikes tyres very different to road bikes. These bigger tyres provide better grip and greater stability particularly when travelling at high speed. You can change your tyres to deal with different conditions.

Women-Specific
Specially designed ladies bikes are available. With smaller frame sizes, reduced reach at key points and more comfortable saddles these bikes are much easier for women to ride. Many brands now offer both men and women’s bikes enabling ladies to try both to see which is most comfortable and best suited to their needs.
