One of the great joys of camping is to lie back in your tent after an exhilarating but exhausting day and enjoy the night sounds around you. Perhaps you’re camping in a secluded part of the countryside or alternately sharing a camp site with other campers.

You crawl into your tent, relax, drift off to sleep and wake up screaming whilst you’re being attacked by a giant grasping beast and the more you struggle the more you’re getting tangled up. In other words, your tent collapsed on you. The more unfortunate amongst you might not even get to the wonky but technically upstanding part and instead spend a potentially cold and wet night sleeping under the stars. However, help is at hand! The following tips and advice will assist you with some tricky tent technicalities.

First you need to choose a suitable place to set up camp. Do not set up a tent in an area where water would collect if it rained, for example a valley. The site should be flat if possible and clear of things such as branches and twigs so you’re not sleeping on these. It’s useful to take a small rake and/or broom with you on camping trips to clear areas. Do not set the tent up under a single tree or an isolated small group of trees so that if there is a storm your tent is less likely to be hit by a lighting strike. A ground cloth should be placed under the tent with no parts sticking out from underneath that rain could reach. If rain soaks your ground cloth this will cause the bottom of the tent to get wet, and for the record that’s about as comfortable as wearing a wet sock in a wet shoe. Next you should set up the corner stakes, making sure that the tent is pulled taut before pushing the stakes into the ground. It is useful to take a rubber-covered mallet or the like with you when camping, which you can use to effectively hammer the stakes into the ground without damaging them. You can replace cheaper stakes with stronger ones such as titanium stakes which won’t bend. Make sure the stakes are firmly in the ground to prevent strong wind blowing the tent down. Deep sleepers take note, you may wake up the next morning and wonder how the scenery changed completely if you don’t secure your tent properly.

The tent poles will likely be in separate interlocking parts that need to be connected together along with their rubber “feet” or the like if they have them. Different tents will have different methods of inserting the assembled poles into the tent. For example some tents may have sleeves on them through which the poles are slid, whilst others may have metal hoops through which the pole ends are hooked. When the poles are erected the tent should take shape. The remaining stakes should be hammered into place to secure the tent base to the ground. Any lines attached to the side of the tent should be secured into the ground with stakes as well. The rain-fly should then be put on the tent, which is a fabric that is light in weight and draped over the tent to keep the rain out. The rain-fly is also secured with stakes in the ground.

It is best to set up your tent before it gets dark and whilst the weather is permitting. Being able to see what you’re doing and having to contend with a light breeze at most is far more conducive to erecting a tent successfully than hitting your fingers instead of the stake whilst the tent flaps around in the dark during a torrential rainstorm. To avoid rolling down a hill whilst being drenched in your sleeping bag, follow these tips and advice and you’re sure to be a happy camper.

The Highland Lakes in central Texas are a great place to explore and enjoy the outdoors. This area is split into six separate lakes. One of the most beautiful is Lake LBJ named for President Lyndon Baines Johnson.

Lake LBJ has a vast variety of activities for families with children or for couples. Horseshoe Bay is a resort city located on this lake and offers something for everyone. It has three of the best golf courses in the country, tennis courts, a yacht club, and one of the biggest Texas marinas. You will have a relaxing time while enjoying the wonderful views of the lake. There are many lodging options near or on the lake. Cabins and guest houses are available for rent and there are also full resorts to take advantage of.

The constant water levels on this lake give good conditions for boating, water skiing, jet skiing, and other water sports. There are many places to rent ski boats, sailboats, jet skis, or pontoon boats. Many businesses even offer lessons. If you prefer, you can rent a boat that is driven by a professional so you can enjoy a day on the lake without worry. The LBJ Yacht Club and Marina is the most accessible marina on the Highland Lakes. It includes a restaurant, beach swimming, boat rentals, and a water park with water slides.

This lake is very popular with Texas fisherman for its great Bass fishing. There are a number of species of fish here like Catfish, Crappie, Bass, and Sunfish. Besides fishing alone, there are guided fishing excursions available to furnish the most successful fishing experience you can have.

There are a number of parks for camping and picnicking along with bike and hiking trails. “The Slab” is a popular gathering place to sunbathe and play in the sand. The water is not too deep, so it is perfect for children.

If you live in the state of Texas, there is an oasis of nature just calling your name. The Highland Lakes have so many possibilities that everyone will find something to enjoy. Lake LBJ has several communities that include Kingland, Granite Shoals, Sunrise Beach, and Horseshoe Bay. You can visit at any time of year and find a place to stay or park your RV along the waterfront to watch all of the boating activity or a beautiful sunset. You will not be sorry you decided to spend some time in one of the most serene areas in the country.

Tracey Louis is a former resident and innkeeper of Burnet, TX and loved the area so much that she still helps promote Burnet County and the Highland Lakes for the Burnet County Tourism Office.

If you’re an avid snowmobiler, than you may also have or will do so during a winter camping trip.

Sleeping outdoors over night for a few consecutive nights is not an easy feat to accomplish without experiencing frostbite or hypothermia or, at the very least, extreme discomfort.

If you think the cold temperatures when you go snowmobiling during the day is uncomfortable, you better believe that the night hours are worse without the warm sun beaming down on you.

As tough as winter camping may seem, it can still be a very fun and adventurous time as long as you make sure to take some precautions.

As exciting and exhilarating a winter camping experience may seem, don’t underestimate the importance of planning the adventure.

Top priority in your list of things to do should be to fully research the area(s) you plan to visit. Make sure to understand the conditions of the winter season in the region so you can equip yourself appropriately.

There are several important factors that you should be aware of for your upcoming camping trip. Average snow activity, planned routes, as well as the experience of your fellow campers are just some of them.

If you plan to camp overnight in a winter camping excursion, you need to be able to make the necessary preparations for your entire group including any small children with minimal experience that may make the trip with you.

Keep in mind that camping during the winter months will take a toll on your body and cause it to lose body heat in abundance. This is why good planning from the very beginning is essential.

Thermal clothes are an essential during any winter activity like snowmobiling and they are even more vital if you are going to sleep outdoors overnight.

You would also be smart to employ the layering method where you wear several loose layers of clothing to provide additional layers of insulation.

Layering also makes it easier to remove clothing if the body begins to overheat. A body that is sweating will likely dehydrate and lose heat much quicker than a body that is dry.

Of course, make sure that you and your group bring a good amount of food with you. Although things like marshmallows are a popular item, winter campers especially need to include nourishing foods.

Since appetites lessen during cold weather, the food you take with you should be appealing so you are sure to get enough nutrition to keep you moving throughout the day.

Oatmeal, granola, cheese, and other dry foods which are rich in vitamins and minerals is a must for winter camper.

A snowmobile and camping trip can be a fun and exciting excursion for adults to enjoy as groups or as couples. With some careful planning and packing, it can be an enjoyable and enlightening experience that can be enjoyed as often as possible.

You can see some of the most beautiful parts of the west, with many tourist attractions close by, while still enjoying all the modern amenities you expect. Staying at one can let you see the state while being one of the most convenient ways to travel.

Many enjoy the unique nature of California through their State Parks. It is a mountainous region and many people enjoy fishing in the area lakes and rivers, hiking and biking on mountain paths or even hunting. There’s plenty to do and enjoy while soaking up he natural beauty of California.

For those and enjoy water sports, you can kayak and canoe on the water, or take a paddle boat if that is more your speed. Many places will rent the boats to you, and there are a number of places to go that will cater to all experience levels. If you prefer to see the trails astride a horse, rentals for them can be obtained at nearby ranches.

At many of the parks, you can stay in contact with friends and family over the internet with wifi being throughout many of the parks. For a night in, satellite TV may also be included with your rental space, so you can relax and still be entertained.

The parks also offer plenty of room to park your RV at. Many let you enjoy the rural feel by allowing you plenty of space between neighbors, so you are not cramped in and lose the peacefulness of nature. It is easy to be ready to go with full hook ups, such as electricity and sewer to make this an even better experience.

You can also enjoy all the amenities you expect to have. With many having on site laundry rooms, you can wash your clothing without having to lose any time from sightseeing. You can also experience meeting rooms to enjoy meeting the people that are staying, as well as many offering dump stations.

When you are thinking about your family holiday, a ski vacation is a good choice. A trip like this is great for both ski enthusiasts and beginners who want to experience a beautiful location and a classic activity like skiing. Enjoying skiing is getting easier as more resorts cater for children as well as adults. When shopping for kids ski packages, you should consider everything from the ski lessons to the accommodations and amenities of the facility.

You should try to assess the skill level f every member of your family so you can organise classes if needs be. Are you all on the same level? Do any of you have experience on the slopes? Knowing this before you book will help you find a resort that has slopes and classes for beginners and children.
Look for kids ski packages that have specific lessons and programs for families and for kids specifically. This ensures that the resort not only has services that fit your family’s needs but has a focus on kids in general.

Think about all of the services that you want at the resort besides just skiing. You need to make sure that you fill your time so the kids stay entertained, and you will get your money’s worth.Look at what is included in the price such as lessons, accommodation, access to ski lifts, equipment hire etc. If you are unsure about what the price includes, make sure you ask your travel agent.

You need to pack thoroughly for your ski vacation as you will need a lot of stuff. The slopes will be freezing so make sure you take lots of layers as this will keep you warmest and don’t forget the socks and thermals. Pack childrens winter clothes to make sure that the kids stay warm enough. Wait until you arrive at your resort before hiring your boots and skis.

Try to find a resort that offers everything for a family.

Failing to take the right supplies with you on your camping holiday can be the difference between success and disaster. Be prepared before you set off, write a list and pack everything you will need. Camping can be really fun but not if you are wet for the entire weekend or don’t have enough food.

Fortunately, getting good camping supplies is easy these days. You can use online shops who sell everything you could ever need. No longer do you have to make a long haul to a camping supplies store, which are often few and far between.

Visiting a camping shop can be really fun for all the family. You can actually feel and see the quality of the supplies you will be buying. Sometimes an item looks great in a photo, but in real life you realize that it’s a flimsy, poorly made piece of crap. There are also some experts at the camping shops who can help you pick what you need.

When I first started camping, I bought all my camping supplies live in a store, just to get the advice of seasoned campers. People who have used camping equipment for years know what you should and shouldn’t buy online. You can use the good brands for the camping supplies but you might be able to find things much cheaper because they are not designed specifically for camping. using a single duvet cover can keep your more expensive sleeping bag cleaner.

The more difficult question isn’t how to get camping supplies, but what camping supplies are you going to need? The answer depends on where you are going. If you are ‘car camping’ and aren’t hiking with your equipment, you can never have too much stuff. If you have room in your car then take everything you think is necessary with you, if you are hiking, try to really be strict with what you will actually need.

Lake fishing is very similar to river fishing, or slow-flowing river fishing at any rate. The types of fish in rivers and lakes tend to be the same, which means that the tackle, bait and lures will be the same as well, although you might want a longer fishing rod, say, a beach-casting rod to cast your bait farther out into the lake. Lake fish will often mature to a larger size than river fish, so your line should be stronger too.

Lake fish conventionally been classified under three general headings. Namely, game fish, food fish, and bait fish. Bass, trout, pike, pickerel, muskellunge, perch, etc., are known as game fish because of their sporting importance. Carp, suckers, some of the catfish, yellow perch, etc., are considered food fish.

This latter group is not though to provide the sport that the so-called game fish do, but they do have a genuine economic and recreational value. The third class are the minnows and tiddlers that can be used as bait for the first two classes.

It is not simple to descibe the right technique to cast long distances, but it does come nuturally to quite a few fishermen. However, if casting does not come effortlessly to you, you will need to watch other lake or beach fishermen. If you are not happy doing that, you will be able to find a video on the subject. However, the best method to learn how to cast is to go down to the beach , watch an expert at work and try to do the same.

Nevertheless, lake fishing is enormous fun and the learner will rapidly learn the correct method of lake fishing. Therefore, I have put some useful tips here to help you learn lake fishing more rapidly.

i]. Strive to take up a smooth, whip-like cast. However, if you crack the whip too violently, you will certainly lose a lot of bait, flies or lures..

ii]. Timing is the all-important factor in both the back cast and forward cast.

iii]. Study the lifestyle of the fish that live in the lake that you propose to fish. All fish have both similar and dissimilar habits, so either get a book or video or join a club to find out more.

iv]. The majority of fish like some type of protection, either for themselves or because their prey will like it there. Be careful of weeds, reeds and submerged logs or you will lose heaps of line and tackle..

v]. As I mentioned before, lake fish tend to be larger, since food is abundant and there is bags of room. A large bass, for example, may easily weigh 10-12 lbs, so ensure that your rod and line are up to the job. A rod of seven feet six inches to eight feet in length can take these sizes of fish.

Lake fishing is not so really different from other types of fishing, so if you put some energy into studying the techniques and fish concerned in lake fishing, you will soon master the skill and become an expert at lake fishing.

Bass fishing is quickly becoming one of the most popular and enjoyed sports around the globe. If you want a sport that will get you out and away from the stress of everyday life, then consider bass fishing. From humble beginnings, bass fishing is now an industry worth billions. The sport of fishing has gained a huge following through the year and today is one of the most popular sports in America.

Even though bass fishing is enjoyed all over the world, it is more popular in the United States since the more popular types of bass are found mostly in North America. The sport of bass fishing has become so popular in the United States that the masters of bass fishing have not only become household names but also are revered and held in very high regard.

What makes bass fishing so popular very well may be the desire to get back to nature and the thrill of the hunt. Fishing in general can seem very difficult or even boring for beginners and it’s often not given a fair shake, but once people get it they are often “hooked”.

Any general knowledge you already have about fishing can be used for bass fishing. You can get away with the basics of a hook, line and sinker. Although when hunting bass people are more often than not using specific bass lures. One popular method of bass fishing is using surface baits.

Bass fisherman and are always looking to improve their techniques. However, in reality bass fishing can be very simple. There are lots of bass in the North American waters so after a bit of trial and error you are bound to get “lucky” at some point if you don’t possess the skillset just yet. However to catch a bass of a certain weight and size requires a certain technique not to mention common sense. Always make sure you have the proper fishing equipment to catch the size and type of bass you want to catch.

Always keep in mind that especially the large and small mouth bass are fighting fish. They have earned the name of game fish. The large mouth bass, or affectionately known as Ol’ bucket mouth, is very elusive and will resist being caught no matter what it takes. The bass will often break water during the fight to the boat or shore. These lunker bass love to hide in structures deep in the water like seaweed, logs, marshes with heavy growth and lily pads.

I want to discuss the most important items to include in your pack when hiking, while trying to keep things light. To improve the safety, quality and comfort level of your next hiking trip, these items will be useful for both overnight backpacking and day hikes. Optionally, when bringing a tent, hiking light is still a possibility.

1) First recommendation is to obtain a map of the area that you will be hiking. You don’t want to become lost, so pick up a map at the visitor center or ranger station or from the Internet. If you suffer an injury, you can use the map to aid rescuers in locating you.

2) Number 2 on the list is to bring a map reading compass along. Learn to use it before your trip because there may be a bit of a learning curve. Once you’ve learned how to orient the park map and the compass, you will know what direction you are facing, how to easily correct your course and get back on track.

3) Always carry two, one liter water bottles. Chances are your body will ask for more, but 2 liters will be the minimum for your water intake. It doesn’t take long to become dehydrated when hiking. It is a physical activity that promotes perspiration and therefore water loss. It’s best to bring with you some form of purifier for your water. For personal use, I take liquid treatment with me. Although you can survive a month without food, you will only last a few days without water.

4) It’s possible to spend an unexpected night in the woods. Always have some extra food, enough for an additional day if you need it. A simple approach would be to add meal replacement energy bars to your pack. Try to get bars that are made from whole foods and contain nuts and seeds.

5) Temperatures can drop unexpectedly, especially at nightfall. If your clothes get wet for some reason during your hike and if it starts to get cold, you will have wished you brought some extra changes of clothing. Make sure to wear synthetics as they are more insulative when wet, and dry quickly. down sleeping bags or bivouac bags, packed tightly can be a light-weight addition to your gear that can help keep you alive when sleeping under the stars.

6) Bringing a flashlight and fresh batteries is certainly a great idea. You may want to purchase a headlamp so that you can be hands-free. The light may come in handy because you might unexpectedly end up out there after dark. Negotiating a hiking trail in the dark is dangerous.

7) Bring a small first aid kit with you. Be sure to bring along important items in your first aid kit like blister treatment or moleskin. Taking a basic wilderness medicine course would also be a great idea and may just save your life.

Bring a lighter and matches in a water tight container. Only light a fire in the wilderness as a means to survive. If another layer of clothing will be sufficient to keep your warm, do not light a fire. Remember, only YOU can prevent forest fires

9) A folding camp knife will serve many a purpose. Be sure that the one you choose has a blade that locks when open. I’ve seen knives that don’t lock take off finger tips.

10) Last but not least, UV protection. Bring a hat with a brim, sunblock and a pair of sunglasses if you will be out in the sun for an extended period. Your eyes and skin will thank you.

by Reid Mark

This is for all the MacGyver fans to know that Switzerland is not all about chocolate and astonishing scenery. It has another great invention which is the invention of Swiss army knives which has come from this beautiful country with snow capped mountains.

Swiss army knives are personalized totally and they are absolutely terrific. They have amazing features. The whole tool box can be packed into a small packet resembling like a large key chain and remain entirely practical.

The Year 1884 brought in a new dawn with the opening of the Victorinox factory. Its owner Mr. Karl Elsner served his apprenticeship in Germany and Paris, after which he started his own cutlery shop. In his factory he made use of the polishing and grinding machine which could be applied with the help of a waterwheel.

The Swiss army knife that we now so comfortably carry in our pockets was first designed for the army back in 1891. It was in this year that Karl introduced his invention to the Swiss army who went ahead and patented two of Karls creations, the Sports knife and the Swiss Officers knife.

Earlier only Karls company was legally permitted to provide the Swiss army with these knives but after some time the job was being shared by Wenger and Victorinox as well. Later according to the agreement between the two companies the rights to advertise the old school original Swiss Army Knife was given to Victorinox.

The emblem featuring the cross and the shield was acquired by Karl in 1909. To this date the symbol is a representation of the quality knives produced by Vitorinox. The company actually gets its name from Karl Elsners mother who was named Victoria.

The name Victorinox was given by Karl who named the product after his mother and added the French word for stainless steel inox to it. This was done by Karl in his mothers memory after her death.

The American soldiers were buying these Swiss Officers knives during the 2nd world war. The word officers was withdrawn from the name and as these knives were selling at a much faster rate, it was renamed as Swiss Army Knife and even today it is called so.

Victorinox was so productive that it took over Wenger after a period of time. These days their products are being used by astronauts, mountaineers and ocean explorers. They have also come up with ideas of many different products like professional knives, household knives, watches, clothing, luggage which has only added up to their popularity.
